The entire verse is basically a D minor chord played over different bass notes. If
you listen closely, you can hear Chris Thile changing the bass note on his
mandolin with each chord change, but its always over a Dm. When the song develops
later, it sounds more complicated, but its the same basic idea.

Ive found two ways I like to play the song.
One is an Am progression with the capo on the 4 in standard tuning
my preferred way is tuned a whole step down (DGCFAD) and in Em
in either tuning I like to let the E string ring open despite the chords I play
capo 4 in standard tuning
